Who am I and what do I do?
I'm Diego López. Oaxacan. Mexican. Professional audio engineer. I produce, record, mix and master music. I help fulfill artistic visions using my technical expertise, intuition and taste.
My Story
I started my career in music 17 years ago, playing guitar in a band in Oaxaca, México. The place where I grew up. Almost immediately music became my only priority and I decided to enroll in the School of Fine Arts of Oaxaca and study classical music. I learned about harmony, how to play piano, read music, Gregorian chant and music appreciation.
Armed with my newly acquired skills y began to write my own songs and eventually wanted to record and put them into an album of my own. So began my interest in recording.
With the help of my family I managed to enroll in a private academy in Mexico City where I studied Music Production. I also took one on one lessons with a professional engineer besides reading books and articles about music production and life in a professional recording studio. I completely focused on learning as much about this craft as possible. One thing I noticed is that most of the modern professionals started in a very similar way. In the trenches. As assistants. Observing and listening to other engineers as they worked. That is how I decided to move to Los Angeles and look for a mentor that could guide me into the recording studio life.
Once in L.A. I began assisting in a few studios around the city until I found Veneto West Studio owned by producer Ronan Chris Murphy. I found out the philosophy and work ethic of his studio and knew it was exactly what I was looking for. So I got a position as an assistant and stayed as the house engineer.
The Present
Besides engineering on all of Ronan's productions I also produce, record, mix and master for my own set of clients from all around the world. I've been lucky enough to work with/for great musicians, producers, engineers and artists such as:
-José Manuel Aguilera (La Barranca, Jaguares, Nine Rain)
-Danny T. Levin (Ceci Bastida, Gary Clark Jr., Glen Campbell, Regina Spektor, Vampire Weekend)
-Jaime López (Odio Fonky)
-Penka Kouneva (Gears of War 3, Prince of Persia, Transformers: Dark of the Moon)
-Alfonso André (Caifanes, Jaguares, La Barranca)
-Fernando Perdomo (Cristian Castro, Andy Pratt, Paulina Rubio, Linda Perhacs, Jennifer Lopez)
-Kane Ritchotte (Portugal The Man, Duk, Bad Things, The Ceremonies)
-Gerardo Enciso
-Kemble Walters (ÆGES, Juliette and the licks)
-Yann Zaragoza (Caifanes, La Barranca)
-John Rodd (The Matrix, Breaking Bad, Elysium, W.O.W., Mass Effect 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2)
-Juan Cirerol
-Alexia Vassiliou (Greek solo artist)
-Joel Van Dijk (Aloe Blacc)
-Denise Gutierrez (Hello Seahorse!)
-Rocket Ritchotte (John Kay and Steppenwolf, David Lee Roth, Lou Graham)
-Ian Sheridan (Jason Mraz)
-Richard Belgard (Blue Man Group)
-Cecilia Toussaint
-Jay Terrien (Rihanna, Moby, Kanye West, Rancid, Stevie Wonder, Alien Ant Farm)
-Fern Sanchez (LP, Hamish Anderson)
-Kim Bullard (Elton John, Kelly Clarkson, Weird Al Yankovic, Glen Campbell, Miguel Mateos, NIN)
-Mike 3RD (Italian artist)
-Adolfo Romero (La Barranca, Cohete)
-Eri Takenaka (Japanese pop artist)
-Ernick Yoshua (La Barranca, Cohete)
-Tony Newton (The Mamas & The Papas, Gary Moore, Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Robbie Krieger, Tony Williams)
-Victor Bisetti (John Lee Hooker, Los Lobos, John Doe)
-Curtis Fornadley (Guitar virtuoso)
-Ronan Chris Murphy (Pat Mastelotto, Tony Levin, Robert Fripp, Chucho Valdés, Terri Bozzio, Steve Morse)
-Danny Frankel (Lou Reed, Nels Clein, K.D. Lang, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Beck, Rikki Lee Jones)
As the house engineer at Veneto West I've done the wiring of the studio, set-up of acoustic treatment, calibrate studio monitors, tear down walls, teach Pro Tools, produce records, digitize/archive Lakota language tapes and much more.
Besides all the production work at the studio I've also done quality control for the pro audio company A-DESIGNS, recorded my own gear review and instructional videos and done two Zapotec folk art documentaries. I've become a Recording Boot Camp instructor and done beta testing for companies like SHURE and F.A.R. Active.
For The Future
The aim is to continue to explore musical genres and the craft of producing records. I would also love to work on music and sound for movies and video games and get involved in projects dedicated to the preservation, documentation and discovery of languages, music and sounds in risk of being lost and forgotten.
